🌨️ It all started during the kids’ winter break back in 2014. We were stuck inside, bored and looking for something to do. I started browsing the internet for ideas—and that’s when I stumbled across Geocaching. A GPS-based treasure hunt? I was intrigued.

It only took a few clicks to create an account and realize there was a cache right in our neighborhood. We bundled up, headed outside, and about 30 minutes later we had signed our very first logbook.

It wasn’t anything fancy—just a simple box near the local ferry dock—but it was enough to get me hooked.

A Hobby That Comes and Goes—But Always Brings Joy

I’m not a daily cacher, and I don’t do it year-round. That’s the beauty of this hobby—it’s always there when I return. I haven’t lost anything.

I go through phases where I cache a lot, and then take breaks. But one thing is consistent: when I’m geocaching, I’m far more physically active than usual—and I really need that.

It gets me out of the house, walking, hiking, climbing—even if it’s just around town. There’s something about having a goal, a hidden treasure, that makes you push yourself a little further.

🌍 Whenever I travel somewhere new, I always look up nearby geocaches. It’s led me to so many unexpected places and taught me so much along the way. Attending Mega and Giga events has also taken me to cities and regions I never would’ve visited without this hobby.

Caches That Leave a Lasting Impression

Some experiences stay with you forever—and certain caches have truly left a mark. Two stand out in particular:

Omaha Beach, France (2019): A powerful, emotional place where history feels incredibly present.
Creux du Van, Switzerland (2017): A massive natural amphitheater—far more breathtaking than I ever imagined.

And then there’s my hometown: Harstad, Norway. This city has an amazing geocaching community full of creativity and passion. The local caches are well worth a visit if you ever find yourself in the far north.

From Simple Finds to Storytelling Adventures

What I love most about geocaching is the variety. On road trips, I often grab traditional caches—they're quick and convenient. But in recent years, I’ve come to appreciate EarthCaches more and more.

🌋 EarthCaches challenge me to learn about geology and natural history. They take time, but the reward is worth it.
📱 Adventure Labs have also become a favorite. These digital experiences often tell local stories, offering insight into places I might otherwise overlook. Lately, I’ve even started planning my travels based on which areas have exciting Adventures to explore.

A Virtual Cache With Royal History

One of the caches I’m most proud of placing is a Virtual Cache at the historic bunker used by King Haakon and Crown Prince Olav during their escape from invading forces in 1940. It’s a powerful site with an important story—and I’m honored to share it through geocaching.

Tips for New Geocachers

🔍 Start simple: Pick an easy cache with low difficulty and terrain ratings.
👥 Join a local event: You’ll meet experienced geocachers who are happy to share advice and stories.
🎒 Take your time: You don’t need to find hundreds of caches. Let it be about the experience.

What Geocaching Means to Me Today

Geocaching has become a part of my life. I plan vacations around cache locations and often choose destinations based on places I haven’t logged yet. I may not be out hunting every week, but I’m always thinking about the next adventure.

Because that’s what geocaching is, for me: a way to explore, to learn, and to connect with the world—one cache at a time.
